What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos (and Why the Engagement Session is the Secret to Amazing Wedding Photos)

It’s completely normal to feel a bit of “camera cold feet” before your engagement photo session – take a deep breath, envision your perfect day, and think of this less like a big, formal photoshoot and more like a few friends hanging out and getting some great pictures while we’re at it.

Let’s Hang Out, Take Some Photos & Make You Look Amazing

If you’ve never had professional photos taken before, it’s going to be way easier and more fun than you expect. In fact, I do everything I can to avoid cheesy poses or awkward moments.

We’ll start by just hanging out for a few minutes and discussing what the session will look like. Once we’re ready, it’s all about you two interacting and connecting in whatever way feels natural. I have a handful of favorite activities to get the interaction started, but every couple is unique.

The Goal: Your session is about capturing the REAL you. No fake smiles or stiff postures—just genuine connection.

Dressing for the Occasion: Style Tips for Engagement Photos

Your outfit is a reflection of you, but certain textures and styles translate beautifully on camera. Whether you’re strolling on the beach in West Kelowna, wandering through downtown Kelowna, or hiking along the sunny mountains of the Okanagan Valley, here is how to curate a look that feels timeless for your engagement session.

For Her

  • Movement is Magic: Choose clothing with movement like flowy dresses, shawls, or skirts to add cinematic drama to your photos.
  • Timeless & Classic: Aim for looks that stand the test of time so you’ll love these photos decades from now.
  • Bring Backup Shoes: If you’re rocking heels, bring a pair of flats or sneakers so we can trek to those epic Okanagan viewpoints easily.
  • Accessorize: A hat, a scarf, or a statement necklace adds that extra touch of personality.

For Him

  • The “Slightly Overdressed” Rule: You can’t go wrong with fitted pants, nice shoes, a belt, and a crisp shirt.
  • Layer Up: Layers instantly elevate an outfit. A nice leather jacket, a knit sweater, or a structured blazer over a shirt is a home run.
  • Avoid Baggy Clothes: Opt for fitted silhouettes in muted earth tones, blacks, whites, or neutrals.
  • The Haircut Rule: If you’re getting a trim, do it at least 3-4 days in advance so it looks natural.

The Details: Logistics for Your Session

  • What time of day should we choose? Lighting is the secret sauce! I always recommend Golden Hour (either sunrise or about an hour before sunset) for that breathtaking, glowy light.
  • Where will we go? The sky is the limit! Whether it’s the rugged beauty of Knox Mountain, the vines of a West Kelowna winery, or a lakeside beach in Summerland, we can find a spot that suits you as a couple and fits your vision. If you don’t have a spot in mind, show me your inspo pics or your Pinterest board and I can send you a few options!
  • Can we bring our pets? Absolutely! I love furry family members. I just suggest bringing a friend along to hold the leash so we can also get some distraction-free photos of just the two of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you provide albums and prints? Yes! While your session includes digital files, I also offer custom-designed albums and professional prints.
  • Do I have to use your studio for prints? Nope. I offer professional printing, but I give you the freedom to use your photos for personal use however you like.
  • Color or Black & White? Both! I produce your gallery in a mix of vibrant color and timeless black and white.
  • Can we bring an outfit change? Of course! Feel free to bring a second look to change into during the shoot.

Why Getting Engagement Photos is the Perfect Practice for the Big Day

An engagement session acts as the perfect “prologue” to your wedding story. It’s the best way to connect with one another and get comfortable in front of the lens. You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference this pre-shoot makes when your big day finally arrives!

Think of your engagement session as a low-stakes dress rehearsal that pays massive dividends on the wedding day. Unlike the fast-paced nature of a wedding, an engagement shoot is a completely relaxed environment where it’s just us. There’s no guest list, no timeline pressure, and no audience watching you. This one-on-one time allows you to practice moving together in front of the lens, discovering which angles make you feel most confident and which “un-posed” prompts feel natural to your relationship.

By the time your wedding rolls around, that initial camera shyness will have vanished; you’ll already know how I work and how you look best, allowing us to breeze through your wedding portraits with total ease and genuine connection.
