The Most Important Questions to Ask When Interviewing Wedding Photographers
Choosing your wedding photographer is easily one of the most personal decisions you’ll make for your big day. You want someone who will preserve your memories in an aesthetic you truly love – and you also need to ensure this is someone you’ll be genuinely happy to spend your wedding day with. You’ll want to trust your photographer that they’ll be prepared if an emergency arises, and have the peace of mind that comes with knowing they’ll safely deliver your final gallery.
How to Find Your Perfect Match
The search usually begins with a visual “spark.” You’ll likely find yourself scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest, drawn to a specific aesthetic. Perhaps it’s the raw, cinematic energy of a candid moment or the timeless, polished feel of an editorial portrait.
To narrow down the search:
- Identify your Preferred Style: Do you want someone who acts as a “fly on the wall” (documentary) or someone who gives intentional direction to make you look your best (editorial)? Unsure of what different photography styles mean? Check out my guide to different wedding photography styles.
- Check the Full Story: While a “best-of” gallery is great, look at photos from a full wedding day. This shows you how a photographer handles high-noon sun at a Kelowna vineyard or the moody, low light of an intimate reception dinner.
- Determine Location, Date, and Budget: Before falling in love with a portfolio, ensure the photographer works in the region where you’re getting married (or is willing to travel) and fits within your financial plan. Knowing your date is also essential, as many local photographers book out 12–18 months in advance.
Before setting up an interview, send a quick email to confirm two things: availability and investment. There’s nothing worse than setting aside precious planning time to meet someone only to find out they’re booked on your date or outside your budget.
The Interview: Questions to Ask Before Booking
Your photographer is the one vendor you will spend almost every minute with. A consultation, whether over a cup of coffee or a FaceTime call, is essential to see if your energies click.
To help you find your perfect match, I’ve compiled the top questions you should ask during your consultation. I’ve even put these together in a printable list so you can keep them handy during your chats!
Personal Questions
Start your chat by getting to know each other. You’ll be spending all day with your photographer, so you want to ensure you get along and are on the same page.
- How would you describe your working style on the day? Do they bring a calm presence or a high-energy “director” vibe? At Jaclynn Anne Photography, I prioritize presence over perfection, stepping in when you need guidance and stepping back to let the real moments breathe.
- Do you shoot digital, film, or a hybrid of both? Many modern photographers (myself included!) love the nostalgic, artful texture of film combined with the reliability of digital.
- What do you love most about shooting weddings in the Okanagan/BC/your wedding location? This helps you see what they are passionate about and how they feel about the local landscape.
- How do you help couples who feel awkward in front of the camera? If you’re nervous, you want a photographer who has a proven “un-posing” strategy to make you feel at ease.
Photography Style & Inspiration
This is where you can bust out your inspo pics, discuss your venue, and ensure your visions align.
- How would you describe your photography style? Listen for keywords like “moody,” “airy,” “timeless,” or “documentary” to see if it matches your Pinterest board.
- Can we see a full gallery from a venue similar to ours? Looking at a gallery from a similar setting (e.g., an outdoor orchard vs. an indoor ballroom) ensures they can handle your specific environment.
- How much of your work is candid versus directed? This helps you manage expectations for how much of the day will feel like a “photoshoot” versus a celebration.
In Case of Emergency
99% of the time, things run perfectly – but you’ll want to know that your photographer is prepared for the unexpected, just in case.
- What is your backup plan for equipment (and yourself)? Ask if they carry dual-slot cameras (saving photos to two cards simultaneously) and what their protocol is if an emergency prevents them from attending.
- How do you handle difficult lighting or weather? The Okanagan sun can be harsh, there could be wildfire smoke, or it could rain. Ensure they have the gear and experience to keep photos high-quality regardless of the elements.
- How is our digital data stored and protected after the wedding? You want to hear words like “external hard drives,” “cloud backup,” or “off-site storage.”
Packages & Logistics
- What is included in your collections? Are engagement sessions, second shooters, or heirloom albums included?
- How many photos will we receive, and what is the turnaround time? Typically, you should expect a “sneak peek” within a week and your full gallery within 4–8 weeks.
- Do we get full printing rights to our images? Most photographers provide a personal-use license, letting you print and share freely while the photographer retains the copyright.
- What information do you need from us before the wedding? A great photographer will want your timeline, “must-have” family groupings, and the little details that matter most.
Finding the right photographer is about checking off the boxes that are important to you: stylistically, professionally, and personally. Once you find the person who makes you feel both excited for your photos and completely at ease about the logistics, the rest of your planning will feel so much lighter.
