Photographing Love in New York | A Cinematic Couples Session
New York has a way of pulling something out of you. The pace, the architecture, the history tucked into every street corner, it all feels cinematic. Photographing this couple in New York was one of those rare experiences where everything just clicked: the people, the place, the feeling. It reminded me exactly why I fell in love with photographing couples in the first place.
My favourite moment happened while we were wandering past the brownstones. They were simply walking down the street together, no posing, no direction, just being close, completely in their own world. The vibe felt so different from the Okanagan, where I photograph most often. New York feels louder, older, and more alive in a way that’s hard to put into words unless you’ve experienced it. Photographing couples framed by classic brownstones, with the energy of the city moving around them, was something I’d dreamed about for years. It felt surreal, like stepping into a vision I’d saved somewhere deep in my creative mind.
This shoot says a lot about my style as a photographer. More than anything, it reaffirmed my belief that love transcends location. Whether I’m photographing couples in the Okanagan, by a calm lakeside, or in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world, the heart of my work stays the same. Couples are always the focus. The location is simply the backdrop, it’s the connection that matters most.
Photographing this couple felt especially meaningful because everything flowed so naturally. They were incredibly comfortable with each other, which made it easy for them to forget about the camera and just be present. The fact that they’re photographers themselves added another layer of trust and understanding. They knew when to lean into moments, when to slow down, and when to let things unfold organically. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like a shared creative experience.
Their story made the session even more inspiring. Originally from Montenegro in the Balkans, they one day made the bold decision to move to New York. That sense of adventure and openness felt so aligned with the energy of the city itself. You could see it in the way they moved through the streets together, confident, curious, and fully embracing this chapter of their lives. New York wasn’t just a location for them; it was part of their story.
At the end of the day, this shoot wasn’t really about New York. It was about two people, their connection, and a fleeting moment in time that we were able to preserve. Those are the moments I live for, the quiet closeness, the shared glances, the love that doesn’t need words. New York just happened to be the perfect place to tell their story.
